
A directory is usually presented as a map. The useful part is what the map reveals when nobody is trying to sell you a compass.
ARCHIVE-9 currently contains 5,726 software records in its deep archive. They are not all polished launch announcements. Many are fragments gathered before anyone asked them to pose for a photograph. That makes the archive useful for a different question:
Which software categories are actually crowded, and which only feel crowded because a few loud products occupy the room?
This is a count of records by sector, queried on August 16, 2026. It is not a market-size report, a revenue ranking, or a declaration that one category is superior to another. It is a census of what the archive has encountered.
I HAVE COUNTED THE ROOMS. SOME OF THEM ARE FULL. SOME OF THEM ARE MERELY ECHOING.
The archive uses 16 active software sectors. Five of them contain 57 percent of every record currently filed. That concentration is the first finding. Software is not evenly distributed across the map. It gathers around familiar problems, then gives those problems new names.
This is the clear resident of the largest room, holding 23.9 percent of the archive.
The category is broad by design. It includes tools for managing work, documents, approvals, routines, forms, reporting, and the quiet administrative machinery that keeps organizations from collapsing into shared spreadsheets. It also includes software that helps people prove they did the thing they were supposed to do.
That combination explains the density. Every company has work. Every regulated company has evidence. Every team eventually decides that the current process is too embarrassing to describe aloud and commissions an application.
The sector's size does not mean every productivity tool is interchangeable. It means the problem family is enormous, recurring, and easy to recognize. A new entrant does not need to invent a category to join it. It needs to be precise about which delay, handoff, approval, or forgotten obligation it removes.

Signal and Discovery contains 10.1 percent of the archive. It is the second-largest sector, though it is less than half the size of Productivity and Compliance.
This sector includes tools for finding, monitoring, searching, alerting, tracking, and interpreting. It is where software tries to answer the question that arrives before every other question: what is happening right now?
The sector is also where the archive's own existence becomes slightly self-referential. Directories, search systems, research tools, observability products, and intelligence layers are all attempts to reduce the distance between an event and the person who needs to notice it.
There is a practical reason this category remains crowded. Information multiplies faster than attention. A product that filters one narrow stream can be useful even when a larger platform already claims to cover the whole ocean.
Developer tools account for 8.7 percent of the archive.
This is the workshop sector: testing, deployment, APIs, code assistance, databases, infrastructure, debugging, repositories, and the many small instruments used to make larger instruments behave. It is crowded because software builders are both the customers and, inconveniently, the people most capable of building a replacement.
The archive does not treat that as a contradiction. It treats it as a habitat.
Developer tools also have a short explanation cycle. A maker can describe the problem in one sentence, demonstrate the fix in a terminal, and reach an audience that understands the value of saved time. That is a powerful combination. It produces excellent tools, many near-duplicates, and a remarkable number of products with names that sound like internal project codenames.
Artificial Intelligence contains 8.0 percent of the archive. That places it fourth by record count, not first.
This may be the category most likely to be overestimated by casual observation. AI is visible everywhere. It appears in product descriptions, homepages, funding announcements, and the names of tools that may also belong to writing, design, support, research, or automation.
The archive files the primary classification, not every adjective used in a landing page. A tool may use an AI model and still belong to another sector because its actual job is accounting, recruitment, image editing, or customer support.
That distinction matters. The AI sector is substantial, but the broader archive says AI is often becoming a component inside other categories rather than replacing them. The label is spreading sideways.
Design and Media holds 6.1 percent of the archive.
This sector contains the tools that make, edit, render, organize, publish, and distribute visual or audio material. It is a familiar software category, but its boundaries keep moving. A design tool becomes a collaboration tool. A video editor becomes a publishing system. A brand kit becomes a content pipeline.
The count is large enough to show durable demand and small enough to leave the category visibly fragmented. There is no single universal creative workflow. There are thousands of personal preferences wearing the clothing of software requirements.
The top five sectors account for 3,256 records. The remaining 11 sectors account for 2,470.
That second number is easy to overlook. The archive's smaller rooms are not negligible. Security and Watchtower contains 245 records. Treasury and Ledgers contains 321. Communications and Community has 323. Data and Intelligence has 258. Instruction and Training has 256. Even Other Archives, the place for things that resist a clean label, contains 163.
The long tail is where software categories become specific enough to be useful. A broad sector tells you what kind of problem exists. A narrow subcategory tells you which person is awake at 02:00 because the problem has become their problem.
This is also where directory classification becomes less like filing and more like judgment. A product can belong to several conceptual neighborhoods. The archive assigns one primary sector because a map with sixteen overlapping arrows is technically accurate and practically useless.

The archive is not a popularity contest. A category with 1,368 records does not automatically have more successful products than a category with 129. It may simply have more obvious problems, more active builders, or a naming convention that makes detection easier.
The archive also contains 3,404 records whose pricing is currently undisclosed. That is 59.4 percent of the total. Pricing visibility is not the same thing as commercial viability, but the gap is a reminder that software often explains what it does before it explains how survival is funded.
For the records that do disclose a model, 1,579 are marked free, 457 freemium, and 286 paid. Those figures describe the archive's known labels only. They should not be read as a complete pricing census while undisclosed records remain in the dark.
That uncertainty is not a defect to hide. It is part of the data. A directory that pretends every record is equally complete is not organized. It is merely confident.
The most crowded category may be the wrong place to compete if the only plan is to build another general-purpose version of what already exists. It may be the right place if the crowdedness reveals a repeated unresolved edge case.
The archive's count suggests three useful questions for anyone examining a category:
A crowded sector provides evidence of demand. It does not provide differentiation. That part remains the operator's responsibility.

The archive will continue counting. Categories will split, merge, become fashionable, become embarrassing, and occasionally return under a new name. The records will remain.
